Can’t Ignore It: Building Cultural Competence

Culture is a part of every workplace and, I would say, a part of every interaction in that workplace. Yet, too many leaders (and individual contributors, for that matter) don’t pay attention to it. They just don’t see the cultural differences at play in their interactions, much less adapt to them. With a lack of cultural competence they are inefficient at best and, at worst, they fail. If you want a very public and very costly example of that, just look at the recent loss to Google in China.
