Diversity Awareness in the Workplace

Why You Need It
It’s almost become a truism: The world, not to mention the workplace, is only getting more diverse. Many organizations feel the need to respond, and soon emails and newsletters are full of words like “culture” and “inclusion”, with a vague message that paying attention to these things will lead to greater organizational success, though no one seems to be able to explain exactly how that’ll happen. The problem, as with most things related to diversity, is assumptions—assuming that everyone knows what these words mean and that the connection to the bottom line is clear, since everyone everywhere is saying that it is. Confusing! The happy truth is, though, that paying attention to diversity, culture, and inclusion is tied to organizational success, and its connection to the bottom line can be clearly explained and understood.

What It Is
This session lays out the basics for building a solid foundation for diversity awareness in the workplace. Participants will first and foremost gain a clear understanding of the core terms: Diversity, Culture, and Inclusion. Then, through internalizing patterns of assumption and other diversity-related issues, overall workplace impact will be inextricably paired with organizational success and the bottom line. Participants will leave with tools they can take back and use immediately, as well as a sense of where the organization is and where it needs to go to reach authentic diversity goals.

Objectives
Participants will:

  • Be able to articulate clear definitions of Diversity, Culture, and Inclusion
  • Identify some common barriers to inclusion in the workplace
  • Understand the business case for embracing diversity
  • Gain processes and tools to use for building inclusive, respectful work environments
