Personal Power and Diversity in the Workplace

What It Is
This workshop uses the Hagberg model of Stages of Personal Power as a foundation for participants to understand both power dynamics and personal styles of dealing with power. Participants will have the opportunity to identify their own stage of personal power, as well as practice using tools and strategies for moving to a more advanced stage of personal power. All of the examples and discussion will be in the context of workplace issues of diversity and how diversity impacts power dynamics and vice versa.

Objectives
Participants will:

  • understand the stages of personal power relate those stages and other power dynamics to the context of diversity identify their own stage of personal power
  • leave with tools and strategies for advancing their own personal power

Why You Need It
Power comes into play in all aspects of diversity, from how we choose to relate in our interpersonal interactions to how we strategically plan our workplace diversity initiatives. However, the dynamics of power and the unconscious assumptions and biases built into many organizational and inter-personal power structures are rarely recognized and discussed out in the open. Paying attention to power dynamics and how they affect a true commitment to diversity can be the difference between a diversity initiative that fails and one that succeeds in truly making a more respectful, inclusive workplace.
