Yeah--It Matters
The Impact of Micro-inequities
What It Is
This workshop opens the eyes of participants to the effects of micro-inequities—the subtle actions, often involuntary or misdirected, that, when piled up day after day, can at best disengage traditionally marginalized employees, at worst create a poorly understood atmosphere of conflict and hostility. Simple yet powerful activities will help managers and employees to understand the built-up effects of “hand-slapping,” and how to mitigate its often unintended impact.
Objectives
Participants will:
- understand the concept of micro-inequities and the impact of those on both individuals in the workplace and the organization as a whole
- be able to identify those that may be present in your workplace
- learn strategies for creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace
- understand the intent vs. impact model and how that contributes to the perpetuation of micro-inequities
Why You Need It
Few would disagree that today’s workplace rarely sees the blatant forms of discrimination present decades ago. Yet still organizations struggle with recruiting and retaining those who differ from their organizational norm, and those who fit that norm are often left scratching their heads at what went wrong. The fact is, good intentions can often have a negative impact, and those cumulative impacts can have an eventually unendurable effect on those who are already all too conscious of their “differences.” An understanding of how cultural assumptions, even with the best of intentions, cause conflict can help build an employee base where all feel respected for what they actually bring to the table.
